Box Tour: CrossFit Jax

CrossFit Jax was once an “underground, dirty garage gym,” explains co-owner Meghan Russell. Today, it’s a 5,500-square-foot affiliate with barbells and bumper plates to spare.

The Atlantic Beach, Fla., gym affiliated in December 2007. Today, both Russell and her husband, Chris, are Level 2 trainers. Chris is a member of CrossFit’s Seminar Staff.

Still known as “The Hot Box” from its former days, CrossFit Jax is now in a space that used to be home to a pool hall with an upstairs VIP lounge. That lounge is now the coaches’ office. For nearly two years, Meghan has been mostly running the box by herself while her husband serves time in the Navy in Virginia Beach.

“We just decided that the experience we had had up until that point through CF Jax had been way too impactful to walk away from,” Russell explains. “But when I think about what my life would be like without CF Jax and without all of these avenues and opportunities to effect and change other people’s lives, I don’t really know if I could handle … not having that in my life.”

Cooking Zuppa Toscana

Clever chef Michele Vieux has figured out a way to nearly Paleo-ize The Olive Garden’s zuppa Toscana.

“We’re going to take out the potatoes. We’re going to use something else instead. But, otherwise, it’s just a bunch of vegetables,” she explains.

The CrossFit Invictus coach begins with bite-sized pieces of Italian chicken sausage in a pot with bacon grease. While it browns, she makes additional sausage with ground beef. Once the chicken sausage is done, she removes it and cooks the beef sausage in the drippings.

Next up are the vegetables: kohlrabi (in lieu of potatoes), celery, onion and mushrooms with a tablespoon of fresh chopped garlic. Once the vegetables are done, Vieux adds the meat back in and pours in the chicken broth, letting it all simmer for 10 minutes.

“All the flavors will come together that way and then we’ll finish it off with our greens and a little bit of heavy whipping cream, which I am definitely not afraid to use—just adds that much more flavor. You could totally leave it out if you want. ”

Strongman Programming

Programming isn’t hard, says stongman guru Rob Orlando. While it’s easy to get lost in the minutia, you need to see the big picture.

“We’re doing this to get healthier, fitter, faster 10 years from now—not next week,” Orlando explains.

In this video, the Hybrid Athletics owner has a Q&A with a group of nine Israeli CrossFitters who visited his box late last year.

“I can teach somebody how to open their hip and use it in less than five minutes,” he tells them. “The beauty of these movements is that they don’t take much practice or skill. But you get a whole lot of work, so it’s a high return on investment.”

And strongman translates well to every other movement—including the Olympic lifts—Orlando says.

“One of the things that we see in strongman is … how important it is for the athlete to use hip extension and to open those hips violently,” he says. “And the beauty of the movements that we employ is that they don’t have to be taught; they just need to be remembered.”
